What is #BlackGirlOnCampus?

#BlackGirlOnCampus is a digital space designed to center Black women as students, faculty, and staff in post-secondary education. We aim to provide information and education about their contributions, accomplishments, and pressing issues they face. It is our hope that this space will build a community of scholars, administrators, and partners that will work collectively to elevate every #BlackGirlOnCampus.

Black Women in Higher Education

Black women have engaged with higher education since before the Civil War. Since that time they have made steady and enduring progress in post-secondary spaces. This history is under documented and the contemporary issues facing them demands greater exploration.

Community Driven Discourse & Discovery

We invite interested and invested partners in creating greater access to the stories and experiences of Black women and girls to join with us in  on the  journey to excavate hidden, promote existing, and create new voices on the post-secondary experience.

Transdisciplinary

This digital space promotes, transcends disciplinary boundaries and is a space for sharing investigations, research, and scholarship that highlights issues facing Black women and girls in post-secondary education. The common goal—regardless of discipline or field of study—is to innovate and identify new ways of SEEING, HEARING, and CENTERING Black women and girls.

Exploring and Historicizing Black Women’s Postsecondary and Postbaccalaureate Pathways

The Mary Jane Legacy Project (MJLP) is the first nationwide examination of Black women’s postsecondary and post-baccalaureate pathways and the first national archive capturing these experiences from a wide array of Black women. The MJLP name honors Mary Jane Patterson, the first Black woman to receive a bachelor’s degree in the United States.
